Tucked under the Napa sun and framed by whispering trees and vineyard breezes, White House Napa is more than a place to stay. It is a living piece of Napa Valley history, rich with ambition, craftsmanship, and heart. Every wall, window, and veranda carries echoes of the past, from the rise of Napa’s early industries to the evolution of wine country as a world-class destination. Here, history is not preserved behind glass. It is lived, felt, and welcomed.
Our story begins far from Napa Valley, in Germany, where Emanuel Manasse was born in 1842 into the trade of leather tanning. From an early age, Emanuel was immersed in a craft that required both precision and innovation. In 1864, driven by ambition and the promise of opportunity, he crossed the Atlantic to the United States. He first settled in New Jersey, where fate introduced him to Amelia Hellwig, the daughter of a fellow tanner. Together, they shared not only a love story but a bold vision for the future.
By 1871, Emanuel and Amelia journeyed west to Napa, California, a growing town positioned along the Napa River and ripe with industrial potential. Emanuel soon became superintendent of the Sawyer Tanning Company, an operation that would shape Napa’s economic identity for generations. His talent and ingenuity quickly set him apart. Emanuel is credited with developing Nap-A-Tan, Patent Leather, and the now-famous Napa Leather, a supple, durable material still prized in fine gloves and luxury fashion today.
As his professional reputation flourished, so did his family. Emanuel and Amelia raised six children in Napa, grounding their success in family, community, and craftsmanship.

Founded in 1869, the Sawyer Tannery grew into the largest tannery west of the Mississippi River, anchoring Napa’s early economy. Located along the Napa River at what is now 101 South Coombs Street, the tannery operated as a vast complex of buildings, warehouses, and infrastructure designed to support large-scale production.
An aerial photograph preserved by the Napa County Historical Society reveals the full scope of the operation: a dense industrial campus with a prominent water tower rising above the riverbanks. This location allowed for efficient transport, access to water essential for tanning processes, and proximity to rail and shipping routes. At its height, Sawyer Tannery was a major employer and a symbol of Napa’s transformation from agricultural outpost to industrial powerhouse.
Today, many of the original buildings remain, repurposed for modern businesses, while the iconic water tower has found new life as a cell tower. Just minutes from White House Napa, this historic site remains deeply woven into the story of the estate and the man who built it.
In 1886, Emanuel Manasse commissioned renowned architect W.H. Corlett to design a home worthy of his growing family and enduring success. Built at 443 Brown Street, the Manasse Mansion was a striking 12,000-square-foot Victorian estate, thoughtfully crafted to balance grandeur with warmth.
From its stately façade and wraparound porch to its soaring ceilings and intricate detailing, the home was designed as a celebration of permanence, beauty, and family life. Historical photographs from the early 20th century show the mansion standing proudly, framed by trees and gardens, a landmark even in its earliest days.
When Emanuel passed away in 1899, the story of the home did not end. Amelia Manasse ensured it remained vibrant and useful, adapting it first into a duplex and later, in the 1940s, into six apartments. Her choices reflected resilience, practicality, and a desire to keep the home filled with life.

In 1990, the historic estate entered a new chapter when the Morris family transformed the former Manasse home into a charming Bed & Breakfast, known at the time as the White House Inn. This moment marked the beginning of the property’s evolution from a private residence into a place of welcome, hospitality, and shared experience.
In 2014, the estate underwent a significant renovation that thoughtfully honored the architectural beauty and historical significance of the original Victorian mansion. Original details were carefully preserved, craftsmanship was respected, and modern comforts were seamlessly introduced, allowing the home to evolve while remaining true to its roots.
A defining new chapter began in 2022, when the property was purchased by its current owners and reintroduced as White House Napa. Guided by a clear and intentional vision, the estate was elevated into a refined boutique luxury hotel while preserving the soul, scale, and architectural integrity of the historic home. This thoughtful evolution introduced refreshed design elements, indulgent amenities such as a heated pool and jacuzzi for year-round enjoyment, and inviting outdoor lounge spaces that encourage guests to slow down and savor Napa Valley living. Today, these enhancements also position White House Napa as an exceptional destination for intimate weddings, private celebrations, and corporate retreats.
