Ask most people what fall looks like in wine country and they usually draw a blank. But Napa Valley has its own version of autumn color, and once you’ve seen it, it’s hard to forget. The transformation isn’t happening in the trees so much as it’s happening in the vines themselves, and October is when it’s most worth planning a trip around.

What Makes Napa’s Fall Color Different
Set your expectations before you arrive. This isn’t a fiery forest color. It’s vineyard color, and it’s a slower, subtler shift. The vines themselves turn shades of amber, gold, and deep red, often while the hillsides around them are still holding onto late-summer green. The effect is a landscape in two seasons at once, with row after row of turning leaves stretched across a valley that hasn’t quite let go of summer.
It’s a different kind of beautiful than what you might be picturing, and for a lot of visitors, that’s exactly the appeal.
Where to Actually See It
Some parts of the valley show off fall color better than others. The Silverado Trail is one of the best scenic drives for it, winding past vineyard after vineyard with unobstructed views. The stretches of Highway 29 through Oakville and Rutherford offer a similar payoff, especially in the late afternoon when the light turns everything a deeper gold.
For an elevated vantage point, hillside wineries are worth the detour. Two of our partner wineries, B Cellars and William Cole, sit in spots where you can pair a tasting with sweeping views of the valley turning color below you. Our concierge can arrange a visit to either as part of your stay. Visit our Experiences page to see what’s available during your trip.
When to Go for Peak Color
Color builds gradually through October as the vines that have already been picked shift into dormancy. Generally, the back half of the month tends to be the most vivid, though timing shifts slightly from year to year depending on weather. If your schedule allows some flexibility, aiming for mid-to-late October is the safer bet for catching the valley at its most colorful.
Make a Day of It
A scenic drive is a great start, but there’s more than one way to take in the season. A bike ride through the backroads around Yountville or Oakville puts you right in the middle of the color at your own pace. If you’d rather sit back entirely, a self-guided day on the Wine Trolley covers a lot of ground without you having to think about driving at all.
More Ways to Experience the Season
A scenic drive is only the start of what there is to do during your stay. Our Experiences page is where we curate everything guests can book for their trip, and fall is one of the best times to take advantage of it. A sunrise hot air balloon ride is the standout during foliage season, lifting you above the valley for a view of the changing vineyards you simply can’t get from the ground, color stretching in every direction as far as you can see.
Beyond the balloon ride, the Experiences page includes partner winery visits, guided tastings, and seasonal add-ons that change throughout the year, so it’s worth a look no matter when you’re staying with us. Our concierge can bundle a few of these together for you or build your whole stay around one signature experience. Visit our Experiences page to see what’s available during your trip.
